St. Elizabeth's Littitz/Comma Pen won the first ever $1million jackpot in local cricket history after beating Broughton of Westmoreland by 25 runs to capture the Social Development Commission's National Community Twenty/20 cricket championship.
In the final, which was played at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium last Saturday, Littitz/Comma Pen disposed of their opponents in front of over 6,000 spectators.
It was a festival affair at the partially-finished stadium as the final proved to be very exciting and boasted a massive crowd from communities all over the island.
One Third, Chris Martin and Jovi Rockwell were on hand to entertain the appreciative crowd, which far exceeded the one for the Jamaica Invitational against Lashing XI the following day, though Courtney Walsh, Richie Richardson, Curtly Ambrose, Ridley Jacobs, Grant Flower, and Rashid Latif, all former Test players, were on hand.
Team's decision
Canute Myers, manager of the Broughton team, congratulated Littitz/Comma Pen on their win while bemoaning his team's decision to change the batting order at the last minute. He indicated that that was the main contributor to his team's loss.
In addition to their prize, Littitz/Comma Pen pocketed tickets to a 2007 Cricket World Cup match, while Broughton pocketed $300,000 for their effort.
Wild card entrant Annotto Bay, who defeated Granville to take third place, took home $100,000. Fourth place went to Granville who pocketed $50,000.
Littitz/Comma Pen, who got off to a good start at 57-1 off five overs, but lost quick wickets, recovered to post 150-9 off the allotted 20 overs.
Ferron Finlay, who top-scored with 42, received good support from Courtney Witter (29) and Caln Dyer (22) against Vinord Woolcock who took 3-23 and Denville McKenzie (2-43).
In reply, Broughton, who came into the final with a 100 per cent win record, found the bowling machine of Littitz/Comma Pen too tough to handle.
The first over was a maiden and the second yielded just one run and after five overs Broughton had only 21 runs on the board.
In the end, Broughton were restricted to 125-9. Former Jamaica player Dixieth Palmer (39) and Derrick Thompson (20) led the scoring against Clanny Witter (3-8).
