Judgement nears for St Catherine councillors

Rasbert Turner, St. Catherine

Councillor for the Naggo Head division and Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr. Andrew Wheatly, along with seven other persons including Natalie Campbell-Rodriques, councillor for the Westchester Division, will know their fate on January 10 in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

They have been charged with breaches of the National Solid Waste Management Act.

It is alleged that on September 5 last year, police caught the mayor, the councillor and the other persons blocking the Port Henderson road in Portmore at 5:00 in the morning.

They were subsequently taken to the Portmore station (One Hundred Man), where they were charged. Since then, they have made numerous court appearances and have also maintained their innocence. When they appeared before R.M. Simone Maddix, on December 7, their bails were extended until January 10. They are being represented by attorney-at-law George Soutar.
