Governing the Internet

Be careful of what you do because it just might come back to haunt you. This is one of the messages given from the lead story in Monday's STAR and it should be noted.

However, the article also raises the concern about laws to govern the internet. With the coming of the world wide web anyone, anywhere in the world can access almost anything once they have a computer and an Internet connection.

But not everyone sees the medium as a manner to get information. Some have been using it for malicious pursuits. The story on Monday reported that various sexual acts, real and in one case fake, were placed online for the world to see.

However, the attorney in the story said there were no criminal charges that could be brought against the individual for his or her actions.

This is disappointing because persons are getting hurt and will continue to get hurt because thre is no legislation to keep people in check. What is worse is that there are sexual acts involving children that have also been placed online.

Therefore, even after the children have suffered the trauma of being sexually abused, the incidents will continue to follow them until the day they die because there is really nothing that can be done to stop the video from circulating online.

The rest of the world recognises that the Internet creates access to information that is confidential and there needs to be some regulations in place to protect the innocent users who are being abused. Jamaica should follow suit and give the issue priority before the situation becomes far more than it can manage.
