Too young to defend themselves against sexual predators and too young to give evidence against the perpetrators.
That is the increasing problem that sexually molested children too young to give evidence in court face.
According to an article published in Monday's Star entitled 'Increase in Kiddie sex offences in Spanish Town' authorities in the Old Capital are concerned about the high number of sex abuse cases.
If offenders are choosing younger victims because of their vulnerability, it emphasises the need for parents to pull even the youngest child closer to them.
The story reported that four cases involving victims under seven years old were adjourned sine die, or dismissed for want of prosecution, in October because the victims were too young to give evidence against their attackers.
Whether or not the men are really guilty is yet to be determined and while the possibility exists that a resolution can be found in the future, the obvious difficulty in trying such offences is apparent.
Community members, parents, teachers and all authority figures should keep more than a watchful eye on youngsters as none are exempt, regardless of sex or age.
As one officer pointed out, there must be more public education campaigns to alert people of such offences.
