Some work at last

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Please give me a small space in your paper to say the people at Church Lane, in Dalvey, St. Thomas, are getting their roads fixed. I see this as a worthwhile step to improve the roads in this area. I can remember 30 years ago people lie in the road in protest. They want to do the job, why ... bring machine to do it?

The then councillor, O. Bryan, ordered the bulldozer to be taken off the site. That was in the mid-'70s. Thirty years later, it has become a reality, the work is not complete, but at least it started with the hope that it will finish soon.

The words going around is that it's just one of those 'election fantasies'. We often heard these talks on the eve of an election year. But, I wished every year is an election year, for at least, something will start, and if it even isn't complete, we can say half-of-loaf is better than no loaf at all.

Word is going around that there will be some tourist facilities to be erected at the Morant Point area in St. Thomas. The questions being asked are: (1) What time frame is projected? (2) What first, Yallahs Bridge, or tourist facilities? (3) Will the tourist facilities preparations be carried out without a bridge in place?

It is about time a bridge be put in place, because the absence of a bridge over the Yallahs ford is a great set back, and creates health hazards owing to the high density of dust in the dry season. The alternate route, the bridge at Islington, is of great concern. There are speculations about that bridge's fitness. The general public has been waiting for too long on the relevant authority to provide an answer about the bridge's last inspection of fitness, and what was the result? Delay means danger and danger claims lives and property. I thank you.

I am, etc.,

J.A. Bailey
