Too much 'passa passa' in dance hall

When are the wars in the dancehall going to stop?

The people are pleading and it only seems to get worse. Nine days into the new year and the headline of yesterday's STAR 'Kartel denies shooting at Mavado' shows that the feuds are only increasing. One doesn't have to think hard to remember the numerous feuds that made the headlines last year, and the family members shot because of these spats.

There was a time when feuds in the dancehall were fought through the lyrics, those days are long gone.

While most people hate the thought of feuding, they can't stop talking about the feuds, the Alliance and all those associated. The feud has spread from not only the artistes but the fans have taken it upon themselves to fight in cases of extreme loyalty. At a recent party in the hills, one young man nearly took on another for insulting his artiste. No matter where you go, the hot topic is either Bounty Killer and Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal and Aidonia or Aidonia and possibly Bounty Killer. Then , there is the Mavado and Beenie man feud, as well as Mavado and Kartel. There are probably more which we have not mentioned.

What these artistes don't realise is that this behaviour is not getting them anywhere internationally. Unlike Jamaicans who thrive on the 'passa passa', international crowds aren't interested and simply can't keep up with all the back and forth insulting. Not only should the artistes stop the violence, but the fans should not support them. If the fans continue to support the entertainment feuds, it is possible they are going to become part of the socialisation of the youths, if it has not done so already. Everyone needs to think about the future and the artistes need to play their part in building a bright future for our youths.
