A man claiming to be Irie FM disc jockey Chris Supreme was sentenced to three months imprisonment when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Ralph Blake of a Corporate Area address pleaded guilty to the charge obtaining money by false pretence after he tricked a member of To-Isis into giving him the money by telling him he was the Irie FM DJ.

"Most of the places he went I wouldn't go. I prefer to keep a low profile and I don't like going around telling people who I am. If they know they know. I think that is why he chose me out of everybody else," Chris Supreme said.

He is now relieved that his impersonator has been sentenced. Chris Supreme first heard of the impostor a year and a half ago but was not able to do anything about it.

Became suspicious

In the incident that led to Blake's capture, the accused reportedly went a member of To-Isis who had just finished performing at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel. It is reported that Blake, posing as Chris Supreme, approached them saying he needed taxi fare to go back to Ocho Rios, where he is based.

"We thought he was a fellow musician and needed help so naturally we gave him the money," said Renardo, a member of To-Isis.

The To-Isis members became suspicious after they heard Chris Supreme on the radio and thought the voice sounded nothing like the person they met. As a result, they called Irie FM for a description of Chris Supreme when they learned they had been conned by an impostor.

"Chris Supreme is one of the personalities who don't do much outside MCing. You hear him a lot on the radio, but many people don't know what he looks like," Renardo said. The group said they later saw and confronted Blake at another event at the Asylum night club on January 5. The accused got nervous and started to produce stories about not having any family members to help him and that he needed money to attend to injuries he had sustained. To-Isis said they were willing to be lenient with Blake if only he returned their money.

"We tell him seh all him have to do is give us back the money and and we will let him go. He said he didn't have money so we told him we're going to take him to the station to see what the police have to say about it," Renardo said.

While at the police station, Blake said he needed to make calls to his sister and his mother to make arrangements to get the money to the group. This contradicted earlier claims about not having any family. The calls did not work out well for Blake. He tried to convince the group members to let him go and then he would repay them at a later date.

When the matter came up for mention before R.M. Judith Pusey, Blake promised he would not do it again and asked for time to come up with the money. But, RM Pusey was unmoved.

"Obviously you're not gonna do it again after I'm through with you. The sentence of the court is three months," said R.M. Pusey.
