For the community of Bottom River in St. Thomas, a void has been left subsequent to the passing of Patricia Duhaney, 'Miss P', who died last year at the age of 65.
Ms. Duhaney was, for more than 36 years, a community mobiliser, a member of the youth club organisation, church evangelist, sports coordinator, public defender, and a Justice of the Peace. She served as a JP for over 25 years.
The well-rounded, dynamic and charismatic woman was the person who single-handedly caused the Bottom River Community Centre and basic school to be in existence, after spearheading several fund-raisers to realise the total construction costs for the two.
Mother to all
'Miss P', as she was affectionately, called was mother to some 18 children, who at different times, found refuge at her home and benefited from her soft, caring spirit. She monitored scores of others who oftentimes received bursaries from private sponsors through her tireless efforts and many more whom she fed.
This was a part of the many who came to show their last respects on Sunday, December 3. The memorial service for the late Patricia Duhaney was a mass gathering of mourners, well-wishers and admirers of this truly remarkable woman. The Mennonite Church of The Redeemer in Salt Pond was packed with persons from all walks of life who came to bid her farewell.
She is survived by three daughters, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and other relatives. Interment took place at the family plot in Bottom River.
