The 2006 Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, held at the National Stadium between March 29 and April 1, was one of the most exciting in recent memory.
In the end, the Lennox Graham-coached Kingston College boys from North Street secured their sixth title, while Holmwood Technical's girls from Christiana, conditioned by Maurice Wilson, won for a fourth straight year.
Holmwood tallied 319 points to beat Vere (303) and Edwin Allen (231) while KC's 233.5 points were just good enough to get the better of Calabar (231.5) and Jamaica College (139.3).
KC's Alain Bailey and Manchester High's Natoya Goule were, according to the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA), the overall champion boy and girl, respectively.
Bailey tallied 25 points for his victories in the triple jump and high jump and second in the long jump, while Goule won the Class Three 800m (2:09.60) and 1500m (4:37.71), along with the 3000m open (9:56.79).
However, based on points accumulated,Holmwood's Rosemarie White, who won the girls' Class One long jump and heptathlon and finished second in the triple jump and third in the 100m hurdles, should have been awarded 34 points, but instead got 22.
Camperdown's Remaldo Rose and St. Jago's Yohan Blake and Immaculate's Danielle Jeffery completed sprint doubles while Sonita Sutherland and Misha-Gaye DaCosta also secured double events.
Rose captured the boys' 200m (20.91) and 100m (10.32) while in Class Two, Blake took the 200m in a personal-best 21.52 and 100m (10.34).
Holmwood's Sutherland won the 800m (2:08.80) and had a record-breaking Class One 400m run (51.13) while Immaculate's DaCosta won the long jump for Class Three girls (5.65m) and high jump title.
Jeffery won the Class Two sprint double 200m (24.16) and 100m (11.75).
