FIX IT - Slated for demolition

The derelict building on Maxfield Avenue that is quite dangerous to motorists and pedestrians. - Norman Grindley

AS A PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. Now we will have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.

This week, there are many issues. At the top of the list is the derelict building at 2 Maxfield Avenue that was featured for the first time last week. Norman Shand, city engineer of the Kingston and St. Andrew Cooperation (KSAC), told THE STAR that he is aware of the building. He says a notice was posted on the building that has now expired. Since no owner has come forward, the next step is to have the building demolished. "We will be putting the necessary plans in place. It (the demolition) will be soon, but I cannot give a definite date," he said yesterday.

Our second issue this week, the broken sidewalk at the intersection of North Street and Price Lane, has gone on long enough. It took 19 weeks and the upcoming Cricket World Cup before the National Works Agency began levelling the broken sidewalk by placing some marl in the hole. But since then things have come to a halt. Are there no plans to completely fix this sidewalk?

While we await this miracle, we keep our fingers crossed that the broken traffic light at the inter- section of Spanish Town Road and Industrial Terrace will not take another seven months before it is repaired.
