A blessed pair

Left: Yanique and Janique Stewart   Right: Joan Stewart - Anthony Minott

Identical twins, Yanique and Janique Stewart earned their mother, Joan Stewart special treatment on the day they were born after a policeman escorted her to the hospital shortly after church that Sunday.

Mrs. Stewart still describes that day as a strange one because of the sequence in which everything happened.

"I went to church on the day they were born, but on my way home I started having labour pains and a church member who owns a car rushed me to the hospital. We had to have a police escort because it was a Sunday evening and the road was busy," recalled Mrs. Stewart

She adds that at about 5:45 pm on November 11, 1996 she gave birth to the first child at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Anticipation was high for the second child, especially since the girls' father Vilton Stewart was looking forward to a boy. He was however disappointed when he saw a girl. Still, he cheered up a few moments later.

Janique, otherwise called 'Tia' seemed to have picked up some male traits though as her mother describes her as a 'Tom boy' because she is always playing football.

Mrs. Stewart told THE STAR Life and Times that she couldn't't believe the news her doctor relayed to her that she was about to have twins, after an ultrasound revealed the fact at three months into the pregnancy. "I cried the day when I found out that I was about to have twins. I still didn't believe until I had them," an emotional Mrs. Stewart said.

The twin's mom said though they fight occasionally, she still loves them because they know how to make her laugh. "If they do something wrong I can't beat them because they always do something afterwards to make me laugh," Mrs. Stewart said. She adds that she has trouble telling them apart when they were sleeping, but when they are awake they can't fool me."

The twin sisters live in West Cumberland, Portmore and attend Portsmouth Primary also in that municipality. .Janique, enjoys wearing pants and shorts. She also plays football with the boys in her community and also at school. Yanique, on the other hand, who is also called Tamara prefers wearing short shorts, mini skirts and tights. She enjoys the spotlight and is seen by her family as the modelling type.
