Before Joan Andrea Hutchinson read from her upcoming book of poems at the Vineyard in Mandeville, Manchester, on Sunday night, she moved those at 'Poetry in Motion' with a story of caring.
Lost on a rainy night in Manchester, on the way to Montego Bay, a stranger at a gas station on learning of her plight, got into his car, guided her to Montego Bay, keeping in touch by cell phone the entire way.
And when they reached where she was familiar with he wished her well and was gone.
But when a lady in the near capacity audience asked who it was Hutchinson's humour kicked in as she demanded, "why yu waan know? Yu want to know if it was your man out in de night guiding woman to Montego Bay?"
There was laughter, and throughout her short poems on relationships, she said is meant as a guide to expressing emotions, a different kind of laughter, a chorus of delight and even knowing chuckles.
Hutchinson began with Mek We Go De Ting a Try, following with Ready Fi Love Yu, even though "me cyaan carry yu go expensive spot". Before Fix Up Yusself she said persons should make sure they are deserving of love, the poem commenting "so if yu see yusself yu woulda look yusself outa street".
Kidnap was a lovable threat to take away and do good things to, so that the person would send a note "why is it yu tekking so long to come kidnap me again?"
However, there was the bad side of love on Fake Love Cyaan Hide, which asked "Why we cyaan have a less expensive house, but a love dat real?", Hutchinson ending with the self explanatory It Done.
