St Jago cool Charlemont

Jonique Gaynor, Staff Reporter

St. Jago High School yesterday secured their spot in round three of Schools' Challenge Quiz after a solid win over fellow St. Catherine- based school, Charlemont High.

The match was evenly played for the most part and it was not until the final section that the victory was a certainty for St.Jago. In the first section of the match, both teams handled the questions fairly well and at the sound of the bell, St.Jago was on six points while Charlemont was on five.

The performances in the second section were very disappointing. Both teams failed to capitalise on the opportunity to earn points and it was very obvious that the teams were challenged by the nature of the round-two questions. Though not stealing the show, St. Jago managed to squeeze out a few more points than their opponents. At the end of this section, St. Jago was on 15, while Charlemont was on 13.

Section three of the match belonged solely to St. Jago. Charlemont, obviously flustered and desperate to establish a lead, made several 'bad buzzes', costing them some valuable points. For a while, however, it seemed as though St. Jago was no longer in the game.

When they gathered themselves, however, and got back into stride, there was no stopping them.

They gained 10 additional points by answering five questions, while Charlemont lost point after point. At the sound of the final bell, St. Jago stood on 25 points with Charlemont on 11.

Coach of the winning team, Frank Weise, told THE STAR: "The texture of the match is a little coarser so we're not expecting to score high. Nevertheless, they could have performed a little better. There are still some glitches that need to be ironed out for the next match."

The St.Jago Team: Greig Drummond (capt.), Seiyefa Sonron, Jermaine Lewis, Aundrae Brown.

The Charlemont Team : Romane Myers (capt.), Mario Christie, Kemar McKenzie, Kayodi Drake.
