Cigar will be hard to beat

by Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

TRAINER Donovan Raymond's ISLAND CIGAR is down in class and will prove hard to beat in tomorrow afternoon's 1300-metre Longshot Trophy for $160,000 claimers at Caymanas Park.

Racing among $200,000 Claimers two Saturdays ago, ISLAND CIGAR chased all-the- way winner SEE DA BREEZE to well inside the final furlong where he was relegated close home, giving way to howling favourite BLOW WIND BLOW and MAMBO closing from off the pace.

Down in class and with the distance reduced, ISLAND CIGAR should slip away from SAID I SAID and SIR KISSON LAL, who are both fit horses but should not be able to match ISLAND CIGAR's pace leaving the backstretch.

ISLAND CIGAR will carry 57.0 kilos but Clive Lynch is a powerful rider, which should make up for the apprentice claims of by Javour Simpson and Andre Martin, who will partner SIR KISSON LAL (51.0) and SAID I SAID I (51.5) respectively.

Martin, however, should boot home PASSA PASSA for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta in the 1200-metre ninth race for Overnight Allowance runners.

DaCosta's runner finished third last time out at 1300 metres behind none other than the vastly improved MAJOR MAYER, who took apart the second-best horses in the land in Wednesday's 1800-metre Zaleucus Trophy.

Having chased MAJOR MAYER almost to the wire at 1300 metres before CALABASH BAY came running on, PASSA PASSA, who was also third in his previous race behind MEDICAL REPORT and DIGI 'N' JIGGY, should now take home the major share going a half-furlong shorter.

Jackpots at $1.5m

QUEEN TAMARA at 12-1 and MAJOR MAYER, who upset more fancied horses at odds of 7-2, knocked out all but one Pick-9 bettor.

One lucky punter waltzed away with $2.6million, sending the Pick-9 jackpot back to its guaranteed $1million.

Despite upsets recorded by QUEEN TAMARA and MAJOR MAYER, there were 11 winning Super-6 combinations, each picking up a little over $70,000.

There are at least three firm bankers on tomorrow's card for Super-6 and Pick-9 players. ROYAL FLAME won't be caught in the fifth at 1200 metres, RANKING looks safe in the sixth at 1300 metres and HIDALGO should outstay all comers in the eighth at 1820 metres.

For Track Price Plus Pick-6 bettors, Gary Subratie's ADINA should land the third at 1300 metres and DON'T STAY NAKEd should get the better of HEZA RANKING in their rematch at 1500 metres in the seventh.
