THE EDITOR, Sir:
The people of the Caribbean are all saddened by the death of a cricketing pioneer. Bob Woolmer, as I remember him, was a fairly good opening batsman. Unfortunate for him he came in the West Indies-dominated era.
Mr. Woolmer is a strategist better known for his coaching exploits than as a career cricketer. He has somewhat revolutionised the sport with vision and savvy. Bob Woolmer was one of the greatest thinkers of the modern version of 'the gentleman's game'. He was the first coach to use the computer to put across fundamental or complex issues to his charges.
This Englishman was keen on whatsoever he did. The role he played was integral in bringing South Africa from the doldrums of total obscurity to a major force in world cricket. He was a model to follow in the modern era of cricket. He has left a sure legacy. It will be hard to pursue and difficult to challenge.
May his soul rest in peace and the love of the father be in him during his living years. Bob died providing pleasure and fun for everyone and as such may he be mounted on high to see the soon coming King.
I am, etc.,
