Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has congratulated the West Indies cricket team on its victory over Ireland at Sabina Park on Friday.
"All Jamaica is proud of your performance in winning all the matches in your first round of the ICC Cricket World Cup and in moving forward in fine style to the Super Eight with extra points," the Prime Minister said. She also offered special congratulations to batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for "a fine century characterised by superb batting."
Mrs. Simpson Miller, who also holds the Sports portfolio, said the mood of the country has been a very positive one, and expressed her thanks to the Jamaican public for the keen interest and support which they have so far given to the entire event.
In wishing the West Indies team continued good fortune as they proceed to the next round, the Prime Minister said "Jamaica looks forward to the return of the West Indies team to Sabina Park next month for the semi-finals, where the regional team has over the years maintained a proud winning tradition."
