The lead story inMonday's Star told the shocking tale of a group of alleged homosexuals who were chased from a soca party and beaten by angry patrons.
According to the story, the men angered the crowd with their suggestive and raunchy moves and as usual, the first instinct of those in the crowd was to attack and lynch the men. What is surprising and somewhat perplexing about this story is the fact that the men actually decided to perform in what many describe as a questionable manner.
Our society has never been known for being tolerant towards people who are 'different' and even though we really are not sure whether these men are gay or not, they were obviously performing in a way that made the crowd uneasy. Once gain, the police had to come to the rescue of men accused of being gay.
A large portion of the society is obviously against homosexuality, but attacking suspected homo-sexuals is not the way to go. Even though it may be hard to resist the temptation to mete out one's own form of justice, we need to let the law take its course. Whether we like to admit it or not, we need to realise that the gay community is no longer hiding in the shadows and as time goes by, more and more closet doors are bursting open. Are we going to attack every person we suspect is gay? Should we lynch all confirmed gays? Where will this get us? What will we achieve?
There are several things in life we do not agree with, but we cannot control the world.
