A man walks by one of the manholes in the sidewalk at the west side of St. William Grant park in downtown, Kingston. - Norman Grindley
As a part of our mission to be the People's Paper, 'THE STAR' has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed.
Now we will have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.
So we are still in downtown, Kingston. And, we are at the St. William Grant Park, where the open manholes on the outside of the park continue to pose a potential danger to all pedestrians who traverse that area.
Last week when we contacted the National Works Agency (NWA), we were informed that a request has been made for funds to repair these manholes. However, the funds have not yet been allocated. Checks on the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) website, on March 16, revealed that rehabilitation of the park should begin in two weeks. We hope that the manholes are part of the rehabilitation plans.
Meanwhile, it has been more than nine months since the traffic light at the intersection of Industrial Terrace and Spanish Town Road has been out. This issue definitely seems like one for the history books.
