Accused bus terror remanded

by Rasbert Turner

Spanish Town, St. Catherine

Howard Wilson, a 29-year-old labourer who is accused of robbing a female passenger at knife point was remanded when he appeared on robbery charges in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court last Tuesday.

It is alleged that on April 20, Wilson was a passenger on a bus that operates between Spanish Town and Portmore. It is reported that about 2 p.m., he held up the female passenger, took her cellphone and handbag containing cash.

When he got to the Portmore Mall, he came off the bus, and boarded another vehicle for the Corporate Area. The victim made an alarm and residents intercepted and pulled Wilson from the bus. He was allegedly found with the knife and the woman's possessions. He resisted and was reportedly given a 'sound beating' by the concerned residents who then handed him over to the police.

When the matter was mentioned in the Spanish Town RM Court, Detective Constable Llewellyn Madden of the Waterford police said that from information received, several men are targeting passengers on route 6 mini buses. He added that in one case a policewoman was robbed, shot and injured.

Having heard the allegations, RM. Lorna Errar Gayle then remanded the accused until May 7.
