A man accused of killing another man during a dispute about where sand should be dumped was granted $250,000 bail with a surety when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Oniel Hall, 40, of a Kingston address is charged with murder and wounding with intent.
Allegations stated in court are that on March 17, at 8 a.m., an argument developed between the accused and a man about the dumping of sand at the gate of a house.
The accused was allegedly told that he could not dump the sand at the gate he wanted to, prompting an argument between himself and the complainant. During the argument, one of the complainants is alleged to have attacked the accused.
A friend of the complainant also joined in the argument and ran at the accused with a knife. The accused man's attorney, Peter Champagnie, told the court that his client struck out at one of the complainants with a knife to discourage him from coming closer, but the knife caught him in the throat.
reported to police
Champagnie further told the court that his client, then went to the Olympic Gardens Police Station and told them what had happened. He was reportedly told by police to wait until the other parties had come. He said Hall waited and waited and when no one turned up, he left and called his sister and told her he was going to the Hunts Bay station, which is the station in charge of Olympic Gardens to report the matter.
He allegedly went and waited on his attorney and then gave his statement. After hearing the allegations, RM Pusey granted the accused bail and set the matter for preliminary enquiry. The investigating officer also told the court that the post-mortem report was outstanding and will be available next Friday. The preliminary enquiry has been set for June 19.
