THE EDITOR, SIR:
Mr. Edward Seaga has suggested that teachers working in volatile areas should be compensated.
As it is on Teacher's Day that I write, I figure there is wisdom in Mr. Seaga's suggestion. I think people working in the danger zone should be paid more as well as those on the fringes. Viable incentives are needed in the creation of a better tomorrow.
There has to be some method of dealing with the money allocated to the teachers who have to face dangerous men and women on a regular basis.
It might cause a dent in the public purse but there will be a greater commitment by the teachers to fulfil the mandate of both the political directorate and the citizens. As citizens, we must do our best to protect the teachers in these volatile communities.
Proper measures have to be put in place to ensure that the teachers are secure from the vampires of our society. To work in solidarity with the teachers is to show a new sense of community effort that could bring about success.
Life in the classroom can be much better if we are cognisant of the ills which beset the teacher on a daily basis.
I am, etc.,
