Labour Day 2007 in Portmore promises to be widely supported with almost 150 projects already being registered with the Portmore Labour Day Secretariat.
This year, the municipal council's main project will be the erection of a historical monument at the entrance to the community of Passagefort. This is in keeping with this year's National theme for Labour Day, "Honouring our Ancestors, Strengthening Communities."
Passagefort is historically significant due to its importance in the 16th century as one of the first Spanish settlements in Jamaica. It later on acted as the main port of entry for the English when they captured the island in 1655 and eventually became a major harbour facility for the capital Spanish Town, under English rule.
As the deadline for submission of projects to the Portmore Labour Day Secretariat approaches, Mayor of Portmore, George Lee encouraged residents to develop projects in keeping with the National theme as well projects that deal with the preservation of the environment and are sustainable.
At a recent meeting of the Secretariat he said residents need to understand that Labour Day is about communities working together for their community. He also urged all of Portmore to be involved on Labour Day in one way or another.
A Labour Day Secretariat distribution tent will be open beside the Greater Portmore Police Station as of tomorrow. Here residents can collect trees, garbage bags and a limited number of no-dumping signs.
