Portsmouth best-placed Portmore school at Primary Champs

Portsmouth Primary school was the best- placed Portmore school at the Primary Athletics Championships at the National Stadium last weekend.

Portsmouth tabulated 88 points, to place fourth behind winner's St. Benedict's 162.25 points,

New Providence 131 points (2nd), and St. Catherine Primary 125 (3rd).

Naggo Head, 71, (6th) Waterford, 68.5 (7th) and Ascot 54 (10th) were the other Portmore schools to place in the top 10.

Portsmouth most impressive run came in the Class One girls 4x100m relay final (52.90 seconds) as they upstaged fancied St. Benedict's and New Providence relay teams.

Meanwhile, Ascot Primary's Denilson Ebanks walked away with the top male athlete award for Class Four, as he won the 100m final in 9.24 seconds and anchored his team to the bronze medal position in the 4x100m relay Class four Boys final.

The 100m Class Four boys final was a clean sweep for Portmore schools as Bridgeport Primary's Mario Salesman and Naggo Head Primary Jevoy Knight was third.

Waterford's Jyusef Hall, a favourite for the 400m event, had to settle for third in the final, beaten by Mona Height's best athlete, Romario Shaw (59.92), and New Providence's Colin Mason, while, Independence City Primary's Shavon Hamilton ran a creditable fourth.

Portsmouth's Yaniqueca Brown placed second in the 400m Class One girls final in 1:03.40 seconds, while Belmont Park athletes Sean-Patrick Clayton (70m hurdles Boys Open), and Donnavon Stewart (high jump Boys Open) copped silver medals.

Belmont Park Primary, Mario Williams, is an athlete to watch, he took silver in the Class Two Boys 100m in 13.47 seconds behind winner Beresford Sweeney, and bronze in the 200m final in 27.82.

Portmore schools did well in the relays. Naggo Head started the ball rolling by winning the Boys 4x100m Class Four Boys final ahead of Spanish Town and Ascot Primary.

Waterford Primary won the Class Three Boys final in 56.12 seconds ahead of Sunshine City schools, Bridgeport and Portsmouth.

Portsmouth copped silver in the 4x200m Open Girls event (54.40) behind Rousseau Primary (54.34).
