Several students from the McCauleys Primary School in Duncans Pen, St. Catherine, got hands-on knowledge of some police work, when they toured the Spanish Town Police Station recently.
The 25 students and two teachers were given an extensive tour of the facilities by Corporal Dionne Watson and Constable Wendy Brooks.
They were taught about the rights of the children, the rights of their parents, how to report cases of abuse to the police and also how they should behave responsibly to be law abiding citizens. They were also shown the different sections of the police station.
Those who spoke with THE STAR told of a very good experience and promised that they will do whatever they can to be good residents and to draw positive influence from the police.
At least two students claimed that they didn't like the police, as their fathers were killed by police personnel.
The consensus was, however, that it was a very good experience for the students and all present. Sub officer in charge of the station, Inspector Norman McDonald, said it was a worthwhile investment.
"At a time when there are negative influences on our children, it is an ideal step that the police is trying to endorse positivism," he said.
He promised that the Spanish Town police will be visiting other schools to bring about the desired changes with the children for the future.
