'You see when you find that special person, you need to let them know how special they are, acknowledge them every day'.
Those are some of the lyrics from 2005 Rising Star Chris Martin's, latest single Take My Love which is on the 'Guardian Angel' Riddim.
It is a well written song that tells about his love and the feelings he has for a special lady and what he will do to overcome obstacles that are in the way of their love.
However, the video director, Jay Will, has taken us back to the time of slavery with this video and in doing so, has contradicted what the song is all about. The setting of the video was well put together, with the theme of slavery and a slave driver.
But there were some key elements missing. For example the couple in the video who was portrayed as the rebellious slaves wanting to escape their life of slavery on a plantation, did not do too much in trying to escape. Nor did the' backra master' try to do anything to stop them.
Also, life on the plantation was made to seem as if any slave could escape just by merely crossing a bridge - that the master won't cross - and navigating a river that - maybe - the master doesn't know about. Also it shows only one master no second in command to help to keep the slaves in order.
The female slaves who work in the field are not saying much and one could not tell if they were reaping crops (flowers that is) or if the men were preparing the field for the planting of crops. The director should have used a cane field or something similiar to show that they were actually slaves working, and not just some people doing labour day projects.
So I am trying to see what the song has to do with this video.
'You are like my very first hit song, all this time I've been rising, but you have made me into a star.'
And in four minutes and 30 seconds there could have been a better way to say 'Take My Love'. There is great scenery in the video but the director has failed to utilise and capture it and make the connection with the artiste and his song.
For the most part, Chris Martin is in a pair of glasses which appears to cover 'his face' and in so doing does not allow the viewer to connect with him.
