Lazaroni to coach Portuguese club

lisbon, portugal (reuters)

Portuguese Premier League club Maritimo have named former Brazil coach Sebastiao Lazaroni as their new manager, the Madeira island club said yesterday.

Lazaroni, whose Brazil team were knocked out of the 1990 World Cup in the second round, has worked with several European clubs, including Italian teams Fiorentina and Bari. He has also coached Jamaica on two separate occasions.

He was sacked by Turkish club Trabzonspor last season.

Maritimo announced the appointment on their website with the 57-year-old Lazaroni replacing Spaniard Alberto Pazos, who failed to steer Maritimo to a UEFA Cup berth.

No financial details of the deal were disclosed.

Maritimo finished 11th in the 16-team standings last term with just eight wins and 32 points from 30 matches.
