A 'Solid' start in music

Sharon Burke - file

As the competition to select a lucky 17-year-old who will make some noise in Los Angeles this summer begins, Solid Agency, one of the sponsors, is pleased to be a part of the venture which it plans to make into an annual event.

Noise! is a camp which will be held at Cal State University Northridge in Los Angeles, July 15 - July 27. It is a programme for students who are 17 years of age that are passionate about music and are interested in applying this passion to their professional futures.

The purpose of Noise! is to allow students to learn about various careers within the music industry. They will hear from people in the business, including artiste managers, record label producers, audio architects, studio engineers and other industry insiders. Students will also tour record companies, radio stations and other entertainment companies. Noise! gives students a first hand look into these businesses and provide them with tools necessary to pursue their dreams.

Students at the camp also learn about diversity, etiquette, networking, professionalism and personal finance to prepare them for future careers.

Head of Solid Agency Sharon Burke said they decided to be a part of the camp because they found that many young persons who wanted careers in music were ignorant about the industry.

"We became a part of it because we saw where young persons didn't know what it was like to be managers, producers and other areas.

When they go to this camp they can go back with the knowledge they would have received and they could also use some of these people as references," said Burke.

She said Solid Agency, intended to make the venture an yearly one. But, there is one catch.

"We can only allow one Jamaican to go because they select only one youngster from each region," she said.
