Man charged with battery theft

By Tashieka Mair, Star Writer

western bureau:

A St. James man who allegedly attempted to steal packs of batteries from a supermarket had his bail extended when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Gayle Montague, 48, of Albion Heights, was charged with simple larceny stemming from an incident at the Hi-Lo supermarket on Church Street, Montego Bay.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, saying that he had taken up four packs of Duracell batteries and forgot to pay for them, as he was distracted by a phone call he received after picking up the items.

Pocketing items

The prosecution is alleging that on June 28, the security guard on duty at the Hi-Lo supermarket observed the accused picking up the items and placing them in his pocket.

Montague was also observed passing the cashier without paying. He tried to run away after the guard requested a search of his person. However, the guard got into a tussle with the accused and was later assisted by two police officers who were nearby.

One outstanding statement is needed to complete the case file for a trial date to be set.

He is scheduled to return to court on July 20.
