Ziadies, Bridgmohan find winning formula

MIAMI, Florida (CMC)

Three Jamaicans were part of winning connections on the Independence Day race card on Wednesday at Calder Race Course.

The Ziadies, son Kirk and dad Ralph, conditioned two animals, and the teenage riding marvel Jermaine Bridgmohan rode another that got into the winner's enclosure in the middle of the programme at the Tropical.

Kirk Ziadie was the first of the Jamaican triumvirate to score, when the 2-5 favourite Soldier's Word, under Manoel Cruz, dominated the US$8,000 sixth race over one mile and 70 yards to win in a time of one minute, 45.58 seconds.

The four-year-old, dark, bay gelding set the pace throughout the trip and drew clear on the far turn and increased his margin in the stretch to win 2-3/4 lengths clear of his nearest rival.

The 19-year-old Bridgmohan gave another example of why he is so highly rated and the defending champion jockey, when he carried the 3-5 favourite Leveraged to a comfortable eight-length win in the US$18,000 seventh race over one mile.

Leveraged, a three-year-old, dark bay colt, raced alongside the outsider Moreapplauseplease through the first three-quarters-of-a-mile before Bridgmohan sent him into the lead leaving the far turn and set him down for an easy ride home in a time of one minute, 41.28 secs.

The elder Ziadie prepared the 3-1 bet Activator that ran away with the US$10,000 eighth race over one mile.

Activator, a four-year-old, bay gelding, clocked one minute, 41.89 secs for a coast-to-coast victory which he finished six lengths clear.

Bridgmohan, who has recently recovered from a heavy fall earlier in the season, is way down in the jockeys' championship with 10 wins.

Kirk Ziadie continues to lead the trainers' championship with 22 wins, and old-stager Ralph rounds out the top 20 with seven.
