Almost three months after Christine Brown stepped into a manhole in downtown King-ston, and injured her leg she has been unable to get any compensation.
Brown who is 50, said the incident occurred on May 28 along King Street. She said it was raining heavily and she was trying to cross the street in the vicinity of the Mother's Restaurant when she stepped into the hole.
"I step down into the hole and I went to KPH (Kingston Public Hospital) where I got registered, I didn't get register till 6 p.m. so by the time I get through I couldn't go home again so I spent the night, sleep pan a bench and went home the next morning," she said
She said later the cut got infected and ever since she has to be going to the Windward Road Clinic for medical care. Brown said that shortly after the incident she went to the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) who told her that the manhole was not their responsibility but that of the National Works Agency (NWA).
But getting redress has taken quite some time as she says she was told to write a letter and bring a medical report. However due to her injury she says she has been unable to return to the NWA's offices.
Swelling
"Mi caan reach up dere now, cause they say I shouldn't walk on it cause it will swell up back," Brown said.
She also says the injury has affected her ability to work. In the meantime Brown, who is the main caregiver for her 14-year-old grandson after his mother died on Labour Day last year is seeking assistance to meet her expenses. "I just want some help with the medical expenses cause it is too much now," she said.
