It's 11:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night, and at Weddy Weddy - Stone Love's headquarters smack in Half-Way Tree - friends Day and Shavon are rocking to the riddims of early juggling. Friendly patrons they are, they seat themselves at this anniversary dinner dance.
Welcome to Weddy Weddy's third anniversary. The jerked chicken is being burnt, cold liquor swigged, bulbous eyes bulging from watching hotties jig to the pounding beat of Stone Love. Looking carefully, lots of wasp nests hung neatly, the pleasure of 'honey' neatly tucked away.
The clatter of crockery and cutlery would create a bang, only in this case, the pulling would cause a scream and some kitty slaps. Meowww!
Don't get excited about the racy neckline, and the very high hemline of dresses. Don't moan about the show of flesh, this is not the time to get fresh. This is the time to skank to the beat of shapely chocolate thighs and toned legs strapped in three-inch heels.
Don't worry folks; if you spill your beverage on those dresses, you just wipe it away. The surface is stain proof.
Sharing dining space with strangers is appealing and to a growing number of diners, it is the appropriate time to gulp down the drinks in the form of Guinness, Red Bull and other high-priced liquors.
Hors d'oeuvres served courtesy of Crazy Chris of Kool 97 with a medley of soulful tunes. They Took The Show On The Road was the 'theme' song for the night, complementing the mood to good effect... Table set, chairs drawn, the guests seated themselves at the long table. Everyone was welcome and the wheelchair-bound 'gangstas', Marlon, Alphonso and Dennis wheeled themselves and found a quiet spot under the guard of a tree.
The host, Winston 'Weepow' Powell, in his trademark sunglasses, beamed with pride saying it was a good feeling.
"It is not really three years still. When you have the police locking off all the open air dances, it is great that we managed to stay around. It would not be possible without Ele who really started this."
The lispy deejay acknowledged Weepow by saying, "yes Weepow, you a di boss".
Then it was time for the main course as Stone Love took over and began filling the hungry appetites. A lot of beef in the form of a bevy of beauties stepped up. The 'booties' were so ample, perching like juicy otaheite apples in the centre of the table.
For all who were alcohol intolerant, there were copious amounts of ladies carrying bosoms, ooops buckets of milk, which swayed with every movement they made, held in check by lacy black holsters of bras.
The main 'entertainer' of the night was the blond-dreadlocked Marjorie who pulled on an unlighted blunt and who gave her age as 37. Passa Passa has Madusa, Weddy Weddy has Marjorie.
Baby Cham was served chilled, with a Bountiful of napkins to go around. When one thought that the feminine form could not be topped, in walked Barbie. Having not seen a real Barbie doll, Barbie was the closest living being to the doll. Statuesque at six feet tall, she and her sister Paulette were twin peaks of desire. Where is Ken Doll when you need him? In they walked taking their places as the gentlemen rose in respect.
The anniversary edition of Weddy Weddy's party production was soldierly-like in its organisation from the cheerful security guards at the entrance who collected the $500 tickets for males and $300 for females.
The legacy of a dream is paying tribute to the remarkable visions. Weddy Weddy over the past three years has helped to promote Jamaica's dancehall culture. The level of activism by Stone Love and the volunteerism to the music will live on. I sincerely hope that Weddy Weddy will keep on being the engine which will serve as an example for dancehall generations to come. A friendly get together, it was a terrific bite. Indeed, indeed, 'twas a good night.
