Dear Counsellor:
My son was recently diagnosed with hepatitis B but we both know very little about this disease. What really is hepatitis B? Is there a cure for it?
Worried Mother.
Dear Worried Mother:
Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver. It is caused by a virus called hepatitis B Virus (HBV). The virus lives in all body fluids, but it is spread from person to person mainly by blood, semen and vaginal fluids. Therefore, you risk getting HBV by:
Having vaginal, oral or anal sex with a person who is infected.
Sharing needles with an infected person to inject or 'shoot' drugs.
Sharing personal care items, such as razors, toothbrushes and nail clippers with an infected person.
Tattooing, ear piercing or acupuncture if infected needles or equipment are used.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Hepatitis B, but the good news is that it can be prevented.
Remember now that your risk of getting HBV depends on what you do, not who you are. Encourage your son to follow his doctor's instructions carefully.
