Barriga looks to instil discipline at Waterhouse

By Carl Spence, Star Writer

Peruvian Danilo Barriga.

The executive of the Waterhouse Football Club has ended its hunt for a coach with the announcement yesterday that Peruvian Danilo Barriga has accepted the job. Barriga will primarily be responsible for the National Premier League team and will oversee all other teams at the club.

Barriga, who had coaching stints in Germany, Holland, Italy, Puerto Rico, Haiti and now Jamaica, coached NPL outfits Seba United and Reno for short stints last season and said he accepted the job at Waterhouse because of the players' mental toughness and noted he was in the business of teaching the 05/06 champions discipline more than anything else.

"Couple of players in Jamaica think they can not come to training today, and tomorrow be the superstar player, but if you don't have responsibility, discipline and good attitude your team is just re gular," Barriga said.

Good choice

Waterhouse president Peter Hibbert noted that Barriga was a good choice for the club because the community was requesting an overseas coach.

"The thing that is unique about Waterhouse is that the entire community hinge on our football and we are merely representing our community so it is for our community that we make these decisions," Hibbert said.

"For some time now the community felt we needed an overseas coach and by way of a miracle we got in some discussions with Mr. Barriga and against the background of support from our sponsors we were able to sign a deal with him."

Club Chairman, Bruce Bicknell, feels Barriga will play a big role in the club's development from the grass roots.

"What we've learnt over the years is that in order to build a club we can't just focus on the premier league team, we have to build it from the ground up. Barriga will be apart of managing the entire structure of the club building from the ground up, so our investments today are directed at reaping benefits for the future," he noted.
