A man accused of assaulting his girlfriend after she confronted him about hiding the fact that he was married, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Belmore Francis pleaded guilty when he appeared before Resident Magistrate's Judith Pusey. He told the court that the complainant had come to his office behaving in a disruptive manner and he told her to stop. He added that when she refused to calm down, he "flashed his hands" and they caught her by accident. A fight developed.
Francis told the court that he apologised to the complainant and that he even escorted her to the bus stop and gave her a kiss. "I'm very sorry your honour. I'm a caring person ... I really care about people."
The complainant, however, painted a different picture and told the court that Francis, who has been married for 10 years, told her that he was divorced. She also told the court that she was visited by Francis' wife, who told her to leave her husband alone. She revealed that when she confronted Francis, he threatened her and left threatening messages on her phone.
Francis was ordered to pay $5,000 or serve six months and he was also ordered to Hand over $1,000 to the complainant for her medical bill. When he revealed that he did not have that much, he was told to hand over all he had.
