Be prepared

Dear Counsellor:

I am having problems getting my boyfriend to use condoms. He never carries a condom. I am the one who always carries one. Now I am feeling a little embarrassed. My boyfriend may think I am easy or looking for sex.

Condom Crazy

Dear Condom Crazy:

Carrying a condom doesn't mean you're looking to sleep around. Many women worry that if they carry a condom, it means they're not 'good girls'. Carrying a condom means you care enough about yourself and your partner to protect both of you. Most people don't plan in advance the first time they have sex, so always be prepared with a condom.

STDS through oral sex

Dear Counsellor:

Can I become infected with HIV from oral sex? I know you may have answered this oral sex question many times but my boyfriend is still not sure and I really want him to see your response for himself. My boyfriend is really more interested in oral sex than anything else.

Concerned Lover

Dear Concerned lover:

It may be possible for you to get HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and also other sexually transmitted infections through oral sex. Oral sex often involves semen, vaginal secretion or in some cases if there are bruises in the mouth or bleeding gum, some blood may be present. These fluids can contain HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. During oral sex, the virus may be able to enter the bloodstream through tiny cuts or sores in the mouth. My suggestion then is that you and your boyfriend should practise safer oral sex.

For further information on condom use, call the HIV/STD Helpline at 967-3830, 967-3764 or toll-free at 1888-991-4444 or write to AIDS Affairs c/o the Star, 7 North Street Kingston.
