Fake cop gets 240 hours community service

By Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Spanish Town

A 33-year-old man who pleaded guilty to impersonating a policeman and uttering forged documents was sentenced to 240 hours community service.

The sentence was handed down on Friday on Beresford Lewis by RM Vashti Chatoor, in the Spanish Town RM Court.

The sentence was reached after a policeman testified on behalf of Lewis. He told the court Lewis was a friend of the police and have assisted them from time to time and that he is asking for the RM sympathy although it was a serious offence.

After much deliberation, a non-custodial sentence was reached.

Lewis was picked up on July 18 near the Spanish Town courthouse where he was observed acting strangely. During a search, he took out a fake police ID and identified himself as a corporal at the Spanish Town Police Station and attempted to eat it. It was however taken and placed as evidence.

On his first appearance, he had pleaded guilty but was remanded as he told the court that it was a policeman who had given him the fake ID. He was represented by Attorney-At-Law, Carlton Callman.
