Style over mental substance

By Dwayne Mcleod, Staff Reporter

Greetings one and all, it's the start of yet another academic year.

Like previous years, this is another time of year which propels our young and future achievers one step closer to their dreams.

While some students are planning a year filled with achievements, it's sad to say that some are only thoughtful about what can be achieved just now.

I recently had the chance of being in the circle of a few youngsters with whom I decided to have a chat. I took the chance to ask the question regarding their preparedness for the new school term.

With the exception of three from the group of 10 students from different schools, all expressed an interest in looking their best rather than focusing on building a solid educational foundation.

"My mada suppose to deh a town ya now, Bruce seh wi nuh haffi pay nuh school fee, so da money can buy me a hot shoes and a hot bag." This was the reply of one of the youngsters, a statement which I deem classic, to say the least.

To my amazement, the kids argued over what would look better on their feet and back without even a single mention of their course of study for the year.

Another youngster drove my mind even further into wonderment when he said, "Mi nuh think my madda get all a mi book dem yet eno, but dat a di least still, mi jus waa know seh mi goodies dem sort out propa 'cause a mad me ago mad di girl dem Monday mawnin."

Before I go on, let me add that while attending high school, I was considered to be one of the more fortunate students.

However, my thoughts never really lied within the realm of being oh so fashionable at school, more so at the start of the new school year.

At such a point, I was more worried about getting a good start and building a momentum which could carry me throughout the course of the year and place me at favourable ends with my ever-motivating dad.

Had it not been for those three 'stars' among the other 'stars', I would have spent the rest of my day and even up to now wondering if school life for me was humdrum.

Let me say to students, while I personally see nothing wrong with wanting to look a little stylish, that should by no way be any major concern.

Your primary concern should be to gather a sound education which will mobilise you to higher levels; after which, being stylish might just come with the territory.

Also, to our parents and guardians, this is a time when a little encouragement can go a long way.

Trust me, take the time to sit, talk and motivate, it might just be the deciding factor between a 'Rhodes Scholar' or a 'roads scholar.'
