Waterhouse in joint second place with Portmore

By Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Waterhouse's Teshian Thomas struggles to fend off a challenge from Maverley/Hughenden's Denise Ross in Sherwin Williams Women Premier League action at the Constant Spring Complex yesterday. Waterhouse won the game 2-0. - Junior Dowie

Waterhouse pushed their way to joint second place with Portmore Strikers in the Sherwin Williams Women's Premier League when they scored a convincing 2-0 victory over winless Maverley/ Hughenden at the Constant Spring Complex yesterday.

After a promising bout of possession, Shanise Steele got the ball rolling for the Drewsland team with a 39th minute free kick. Twenty-five yards from goal, Steele blasted a high curling shot, which dipped over the head of a rooted Telesha Campbell, Maverley custodian.

Firmly in control of the game, Waterhouse would then finish off the game through an unlikely source, Marla Simmonds, in the 87th minute. A determined surge forward from the centre-half position saw the central defender power her way past several Maverley/Hughenden defenders before lodging the ball in the back of the net, past stranded keeper Campbell. Before that final blow was struck, Maverley, who went down 4-0 to Waterhouse in the knockout competition semi-finals on Sunday, had a couple of chances to grab an equaliser.

Near miss

Latoya Daley found herself staring at a gaping net from an Anna-Kay Williams-cross, but scooped the effort high over the cross bar from no more than eight yards away. Minutes later, busy Genesha Pickersgill unleashed a one-time volley to goal from a long-drifting Williams cross, but the ball ended up straight in the bosom of Waterhouse goalie Kimberly Green.

"It was a much more spirited performance by the team than last week's semi-finals." said Maverley manager Michael Lowe.

"We haven't had our full team since school has started, with the majority of our team being schoolgirls, it's going to be difficult," Lowe added

Despite a second straight win over Maverley, Waterhouse coach Xavier Gilbert was not entirely pleased with his team's showing.

"We are happy for the result. We had a better second half but our finishing left a lot to be desired. We will have to try and fix that before our (knockout) final on Sunday," he said.

In the day's other games, league leaders Harbour View, who moved to seven points, had to settle for a share of the points following a 0-0 draw with Barbican at Barbican Complex. At Cling Cling Oval, two goals from Sydonie Hall led hosts Olympic Gardens to a 2-1 win over promoted Meadheaven United.
