By Michael McLean, STAR Writer

One of two men who reportedly challenged a police party was shot to death by the police at Russell district in St Elizabeth on Thursday night.

The dead man has been identified as Delroy Vernon otherwise called 'Bobby Nose', 37-year-old labourer of Northampton district who was also wanted for murder. He died from a single gunshot wound.

Reports are that the Santa Cruz police went on an operation in the Russell district where they spotted a man who was standing alongside a red Suzuki motor car talking to someone inside the vehicle. On the approach of the police, the man who was standing challenged the police by firing several gunshots at them. The police returned fire and the man ran. Vernon who was still inside the vehicle was hit.

He was taken to the Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The police searched the vehicle where an assortment of live rounds was taken from the dead man's body.
