A man accused of being a part of a mob killing in the Half-Way Tree area, recently, was denied bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The accused, Dwayne Miller, appeared before RM Judith Pusey to answer to the charge of murder.
The court heard that on June 5, a man accused of stealing a woman's handbag was chased and stabbed to death along Bradley and Cargill avenues. Miller, the court also heard, was seen with a knife. Clerk of Court Hansurd Lawson said Miller reportedly called his girlfriend within earshot of others and said, "Mi jus' kill a bwoy. Yu si how yu mash up mi life. If yu nuh believe mi ask [name of witness]."
The court heard that the witness further confirmed Miller's claims and told the girlfriend, "Di bwoy jus' grab a woman bag and dem kill him wicked, wicked. A di one whe 'im get inna him back sen im off."
Miller's lawyer, Antonnette Haughton-Cardenas, asked for bail on her client's behalf, telling the court that this was his first conviction. RM Pusey, however, emphasising the gravity of the situation, would not be moved. "What sort of savagery can we tolerate in society before we wake up?" she asked.
Miller is to return to court on October 11.
