A woman accused of burning three persons with a corrosive liquid, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Nadine Phillips, the accused, is facing three counts of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. The court heard that on September 17 at about 8 a.m., a dispute developed between Phillips and the complainants. Phillips reportedly accused the complainant of splashing her with her soapy water. She reportedly threw some water at the complainant and another complainant intervened. Phillips, the court heard, went into her house and came out with a bucket of caustic substance, which she threw on the complainants. All were hospitalised.
Phillips' lawyer, however, had a different story. He told the court that the friction began after Phillips' mother provided the police with information about an alleged criminal that was living in their community. The family of this man, the lawyer argued, have been making Phillips' life extremely difficult since then. He said she had been attacked on several occasion by the family and on this particular day, was merely defending herself from the attacks.
At this point, the female complainant interjected, "none of us don't trouble har. All of us is family. We is not di first people she burn up." The other complainant, a male, with obvious burns to his face, said nothing.
Phillips, 28, whose lawyer told the court that the offence was her first, was not granted bail by RM Glen Brown, and is to return to court on October 11.
