A mentally challenged teenager, who burned down a house he had shared with a tenant, was granted bail with the condition that he see the psychiatrist and take his medication.
RM Winsome Henry made the ruling when 19-year-old Collin Walters appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Walters, who resides at Over River, Sign, in St. James, has been in custody since June for him to be assessed by a psychiatrist. He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 and is to reside with his aunt and grandmother.
The court learned that the house he allegedly burned belonged to his grandmother but the complainant had rented a section.
His aunt told the court that there have been times when he refused to take his medication. RM Henry told Walters that if he refused to go to the psychiatrist and take the prescribed medication, he could find himself back behind bars.
A witness alleged that on June 14, he saw the accused pour liquid on to a door before setting the house ablaze. The complainant allegedly lost all her belongings in the fire.
When Collins was arrested on June 15, he allegedly said, "Every time mi turn on the TV mi si a whole heap of people on it."
Arson charges were subsequently brought against him.
