JOCKEY Trevor 'Slicer' Simpson twice had run-ins with the Governor-General yesterday, picking up his Order of Distinction at the National Indoor Sports Centre in the morning before rushing off to Caymanas Park to land two races including the Governor- General's Stakes aboard Philip Feanny-trained RUM TALK.
Simpson, who erased George HoSang's long-standing mark of most winners in a season, 167, by booting home 172 winners in 2002, received his national honour, along with trainer Vincent Edwards, for outstanding contribution to the sport of horseracing.
However, Simpson, who has so far won five jockeys' titles, had business to tend at Caymanas Park and moved his career tally to 1,260 local winners by pushing TANTESOLDE to victory in his first ride of the day in the 1000-metre round Norman Manley Cup.
Redeeming ride
The 38-year-old jockey was far from finished and reminded apprentice Omar Walker the race for the 2007 jockeys' championship was not his for the taking with a typical determined ride in the 20000-metre Governor- General's Stakes.
Simpson, who was vilified after his Derby loss aboard RUM TALK, redeemed himself by producing the Guineas and St. Leger winner at the top of the lane to outfinish Walker aboard ALLIEDFORCE and Brian Harding astride the favourite MIRACLE MAN.
Simpson's two victories moved him to 57 wins for the season, two behind the two-kilo claimer Walker, who had two winners on the 12-race card, ALLEGRO in the third event at a mile and NUMERO UNO in the ninth over 1000m straight.
The win astride RUM TALK had Simpson's fans in ecstasy as he faced his current rival, Walker, as well as Trinidadian Harding, who won back-to-back titles at Caymanas Park in 2005 and 2006, at the expense of the Jamaican champion.
Simpson won the battle yesterday by making his move at the half-mile aboard RUM TALK, picking off rivals to straighten on the outside of MIRACLE MAN, who again carried the crushing impost of 60.5 kilos and had taken over the lead from Jamaica Derby winner, THE BOMBER, two and a half furlongs out.
Meanwhile, Walker had ALLIEDFORCE take a ground-saving run into the straight, joining MIRACLE MAN and RUM TALK in a three-horse battle to the line.
A lil extra
However, RUM TALK found extra inside the final half-furlong to inch away from rivals, lasting by a neck from ALLIEDFORCE, who had a head to spare over the sandwiched MIRACLE MAN, giving away an average of 20 lbs to his conquerors.
The Governor-General's Stakes has set up an intriguing clash for the 2000-metre November 10 Superstakes when RUM TALK will carry 54.0 kilos and two-time defending champion MIRACLE MAN, 57.0, along with the likes of ALLIEDFORCE, MAJOR MAYER and DISTINCTLY IRISH.
Meanwhile, trainer Noel Enne-vor's two-year-old debutant, HOMBRE, turned in a smashing performance to land the 1300-metre Hi-Pro Stables Choice Feed Trophy race in a speedy 1:19.2, beating Wayne DaCosta's duo of HEART OF GOLD and THE GUARDIAN.
HOMBRE's manner of victory, moving away to win by three and a quarter-length under apprentice Andre Martin, was one of the most impressive performances, beyond six furlongs, by a two-year-old this season.
Ennevor emerged leading trainer on the day with two winners as his BORN FIGHTER, partnered by Paul Francis, landed the fifth event at 1500 metres.
