Hot battle continues for daCosta inter-zone berths

The very interesting 2007 daCosta Cup competition continues today with 14 matches across five zones.

Six teams have already secured inter-zone berths and the battle for the other 18 places is getting very hot.

While Zone E contenders St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), currently on 15 points, will join zone leaders Munro College (19) in the inter-zone round with victory over the struggling Lacovia (7), their match will probably play second-fiddle to the Zone H clash between second- place Lennon (19) and third-place Denbigh (18).

In the first round meeting between STETHS and Lacovia, the Kurt Brooks-coached STETHS team, whose only blemish this season has been their 3-0 and 1-0 defeats to Munro, looked good in coming out 2-0 winners. Today, with home advantage at their disposal, STETHS should win easily and move into the inter-zone.

With Clarendon College having a 100 per cent record from seven games and looking safe bets for one of the two inter-zone places from Zone H, today's clash between Lennon and Denbigh is all but a do-or-die situation for the teams as defeat could seriously hamper their inter-zone chances.

Tough task

In their first meeting, the Lennon team, which is sporting a fairly decent six wins, one draw and one defeat record, came up 1-0 winners. Repeating their first round success on the home ground of the Denbigh team, which has six wins against two defeats could well take some doing.

Champion Glenmuir (13), which dropped their fourth point of the season in a 1-1 draw with group leaders Garvey Maceo (17) on Saturday, should be gunning to consolidate their second place position in the group ahead of Old Harbour (12), who will face the might of the Garvey Maceo team on their home turf.

While they are unlikely to overtake Garvey Maceo for zone honours, in terms of sheer quality, the Glenmuir team still looks potentially the best team in the competition and should they hit the right grove today, the Jackie Walters coached boys could see their impressive 31-goal tally jumping significantly.

In terms of hype, the Zone A super derby between leaders Cornwall College (15) and third place Herbert Morrison (8) - the second such clash in three days - should churn out much excitement as while Cornwall College will be aiming to pull within a point of the inner-zone round, revenge and survival should be Herbert Morrison's primary focus.

In Zone K, where Annotto Bay (24), Brimmervale (21) and Oracabessa (20) are locked in a mad scramble for the two inter-zone places,

it should be all excitement as all three teams go after less illustrious opponents.
