Move out! - Man ordered to avoid wife while on bail

By Tashieka Mair, Star Writer

western bureau

A man, who allegedly assaulted his 11-year-old son and common-law wife, had stringent conditions added to his bail when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Michael Clarke, granted $15,000 station bail, will have to leave the premises at Fairfield Private in St. James and reside with his father in nearby Granville.

Clarke is facing two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He is also expected to report to the Granville police on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and is to have no form of contact with the female complainant.

Knife attack

Allegations are that on October 4, Clarke attacked his common-law wife with a kitchen knife after accusing her of having another man. The complainant ran, fell and, while on the ground, was allegedly kicked several times.

It is said that the woman ran and Clarke jumped on to her back. She managed to escape and ran into the house and locked the door. The accused kicked open the door and went into his son's room where he allegedly used the kitchen knife to slap the child in the face causing injury to his eye, because the child did not open the door for the accused.

Clarke, however, told the court that the allegations are false and he did not believe in separation as he loves his wife and their son.

However, RM Winsome Henry, after being informed of the history of violence between the couple, and the fact that Clarke had attacked the complainant several occasions after his release from custody, told the accused that he should not have been given station bail.

She, therefore, warned him to stay away from the complainant if he wants to remain on bail, and advised him to seek the assistance of an attorney.

The matter will again be mentioned on October 30.
