Driver said King admitted being gay

At yesterday's continuation of the preliminary enquiry into the death of Ambassador Peter King, his driver told the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court that he knew his boss was gay because he admitted it to him.

Unlike Monday's witness, who claimed she was not aware of King's homosexuality or if he taped sexual encounters, the driver told the court that King had a 'catalogue' with all his visitors. He further explained that pictures of some of King's visitors were stored on his personal computer, which was kept in his office, a door away from his bedroom.

He, however, stated that King made no advances to him during the 11 years he worked at the property. He denied that he was one of King's lovers and said their relationship was strictly professional.

The preliminary enquiry is being held to determine whether Sheldon Pusey should stand trial for King's murder. The ambassador was found dead at his St. Andrew home on March 20 with multiple stab wounds. Pusey was later arrested and charged.

Under intense cross-examination from Pusey's lawyer, Berry Bryan, the witness told the court that he had seen many persons visit the house. In response to whether the visitors were mainly "young boys from the ghetto", the witness said the visitors were mainly highly respectable lawyers, doctors and police officers. He denied that the house was fitted with surveillance cameras, but said King often used a camera to take pictures of his guests.

He told the court that on the morning that King's body was discovered, he got up shortly before 4 a.m. to go swimming with him, a usual part of their morning routine. When he did not hear from him, he said he assumed King was tired after a long night of speech writing. He explained that he went about his regular duties, but noticed the verandah and bedroom lights were on and that the television was playing at an abnormally high volume.

He further told the court that after a call from another co-worker he went to King's room and tried to gain access. When this failed, he said he used a ladder to gain entry to the room and noticed King's bloodstained comforter and pillows on the floor. After lifting the sheet and realising King's body was beneath it, he said he called the police.

Bryan had to be reprimanded by RM Glen Brown on several occasions as he suggested that the witness himself had murdered King and that he, too, was gay. RM Brown told him to "stop assaulting the witness". Bryan asked the witness why he took so long to check on King if he observed so many abnormal things, and suggested that he killed King in a jealous rage.

The preliminary enquiry will continue next Thursday.
