Please help the helper

Unlike some persons her age, Amanda Wilkinson is still willing and able to work in order to survive. The 78-year-old does not have a steady job and although many like her spend their days enjoying retirement, she is seeking the public's help to get back on her feet.

Wilkinson lives alone and recently stopped working as a live-in domestic helper. Before that, she worked at the Princess Margaret Hospital for three months. She also told THE STAR that she tried selling snacks so she could earn money, but that venture failed. The mother of 10 is also a grandmother and great grandmother, but told THE STAR that her children were not in a position to help her.

"Everybody get big now. Dem want help demself. Dem nuh have much fi spare," she said.

Money problems

She continued, "I used to sell snacks and so on, but tings went bad. I don't have any money, so I'm having problems. Mi stop working a long time now." The elderly woman told THE STAR, "If I could get to start back something, like to buy and sell, that would be good. Snacks naw sell more dan so, so if I could get help to buy like a scale or so, I could sell some food in the market. I would buy from di farmer dem or di vendors and sell back. I am willing to work", she said.

Wilkinson is thankful that she is still well enough to be able to work and said, "I am healthy. I can manage. God gimmi di strength 'cause I pray to God and ask him for strength." She pleaded, "If there is a kind person out there that could help me so I could help myself with a little money or so, I would be grateful. I don't want much. Jus' a likkle ting fi get me back on mi feet."

Anyone willing to help Wilkinson, may contact her at 425-2390
