Hit-and-hide suspect charged with manslaughter

A Hanover resident, who was allegedly involved in a 'hit-and-hide' accident, is now in police custody and slapped with a charge of manslaughter.

Charged is 55-year-old mechanic Lansford Evans of Copperwood in Lucea, while dead is 70-year-old sign artist, Sydney Lawrence of Haughton Grove in the parish.

According to police reports, Lawrence was riding his motorcycle along Watson Taylor Drive in Lucea, at about 8:30 p.m. on October 12, when he was hit by a bus and his body hidden in a garage at the Lucea examination depot.

His body was later found at the depot. The police who were summoned later took Evans into custody after preliminary investigations pointed to him being involved.

He is also facing a charge of failing to report an accident within 24-hours.

He was subsequently charged on Tuesday in connection with the incident.

He is set to face the Lucea Resident Magistrate's Court on November 13.
