Jamaica's Sunshine Girls won their second successive game at the Netball World Championships yesterday, but Caribbean neighbours Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) both suffered losses.
Jamaica cruised past Fiji 78-35 in Pool C at the Trusts Stadium to rack up their second win after they beat the Cook Islands, Sunday.
In contrast, Barbados suffered their second successive loss when they went down 56-36 to South Africa while T&T lost their first game when they were crushed by Australia, 78-34.
Jamaica, ranked number three in the world, were always in control of their encounter and led 15-8, 33-17 and 54-26 throughout the three quarters before wrapping up the easy win.
They were led by Elaine Davis who shot 28 from 30 attempts and Simone Forbes who was 28 of 34. Romelda Aiken finished with 22 from 23 attempts.
"I am proud of the team," Davis said. "Earlier in the year when we came here, the performance was not as good. We weren't so consistent as a team so I'm really, really proud of the girls here now."
For Fiji, Taraima Rara was the bright spot with 11 from 17 attempts.
T&T, meanwhile, were brought down to earth in Pool B after they opened the tournament with a fine win over Scotland on Sunday.
Pitted against the world number two team, T&T struggled against the Australians and trailed 24-9, 41-19 and 58-30 over the first three quarters.
Anastacia Wilson led T&T, shooting 17 from 23 attempts while Janelle Barker scored nine of 10 attempts.
For Australia, Sue Pratley had the hot hands with 42 goals from 49 attempts while Sharelle McMahon was good for 25 from 26 attempts.
"It was a very pleasing start for us with 24 goals after the first quarter and perhaps we let that slip a little bit in the second quarter but we picked it up again in that third quarter so there were good things to take away and also some things to work on," said McMahon, Australia's vice-captain.
Australia sent their victory bid in motion early, racing to an early first quarter lead. Even though T&T improved in the second quarter, Australia continued their march towards an easy victory.
