The death of two police officers in a 24-hour-span has led the Police High Command to describe the day as one the saddest in their history.
In one of the latest attacks on the lives of the nation's security personnel, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gilbert Kameka, was found dead shortly after midday in Irish Town, St. Andrew.
ACP Kameka had served the Jamaica Constabulary Force for 28 years and was the commander of the Area 4 police. The graduate of the Manning's High School was currently in pursuit of his master's degree in National Security and Strategic Planning.
Meanwhile, the police constable who was cut down by gunmen early yesterday morning has now been identified.
He is, 34-year old Valentino Chambers of the Hannah Town Police Station.
Police reports are that at about 1:30 a.m. Constable Chambers was driving his Toyota Camry along Bowrey Road. Upon reaching the vicinity of Slipe Pen Road, he was attacked and fired upon by a group of gunmen armed with high powered weapons.
The injured policeman reportedly returned the fire but lost control of his vehicle which ran off the road and crashed into a wall. The constable's firearm was also reportedly taken.
The Denham Town police are investigating.
